Pool Sessions

Each winter the club runs pool sessions in the competition pool at the Inverness Aquadome on Friday nights from October until March. This gives members the chance to learn new skills, consolidate existing skills, experiment and have fun in a warm, safe environment. The pool sessions are suitable for complete beginners, and anybody who lacks confidence - as well as those who want to work on their rolling and rescues.

People can pre-book blocks of 4 coached sessions. There will be 12 adult and 6 children’s places. In addition to these bookable places, there will be a free practice option for members who do not need to be coached and who want to practice/experiment on their own or with peers. Free practice is not suitable for beginners or for children under the age of 16 unless they are particularly well experienced. Older youngsters, able to work on their own without coaching, are welcome to make use of the free practice facility, but parents should be aware that this is an open adult pool session, and it is the responsibility of parents to make arrangements for appropriate supervision. Coached groups will take priority for boats.

The pool is booked from 9.15pm until 10.30pm with the coached session lasting from 9.15pm until 10pm. At this point, we will ask the children to leave the pool and get changed. The remaining time is for free practice, both for coaches and anyone who wants to continue to practice/experiment on their own or with their peers.

A wide variety of river boats are stored at the Aquadome (usually along with one or two sea kayaks) - the pool don't allow us to bring our own boats. Help getting the kayaks out of the store beforehand and putting them away afterwards is always very much appreciated.

When you arrive at the Aquadome, there is no need to pay at the front desk when you arrive; just come down to the main changing rooms. The competition pool at the Aquadome is not the warmest pool! You may not be warm enough in just your swimming costume. Wear a wet suit if you have one or shorts and a (synthetic or thermal) t-shirt over your swimming costume. Some people wear neoprene boots or shoes, while others prefer bare feet. Please ensure that anything you bring into the pool is clean - clothing, spray deck, paddles etc - and remember to shower before entering the pool.

Pool sessions cost £5 per session, payable at the poolside. People may attend one pool session without being members of the club but thereafter must join the club if they wish to continue participating in pool sessions. Just come on a Friday night at 9pm and speak to one of the club members/coaches present.

 

WINTER 2018/9

This winter, pool sessions start on the 5th October 2018 and continue until the middle of March 2019. If you are happy to practice on your own or with your peers, you can just turn up (free practice) - if you are a beginner and would like an introduction to kayaking, or want to work on a specific skill, such as rolling or rescues, then you can book a block of coached sessions.

The dates for each block of coached sessions are:

1st block: 5th Oct, 12th Oct, 19th Oct, 26th Oct, 2nd Nov 2018

2nd block: 9th Nov, 16th Nov, 23rd Nov, 30th Nov, 7th Dec 2018

3rd block: 11th Jan, 18th Jan, 25th Jan, 1st Feb, 8th Feb 2019

4th block: 15th Feb, 22nd Feb, 1st Mar, 8th Mar, 15th Mar 2019
