Club Development (3)

Over the last few months we have been looking at the future of the Inverness Canoe Club. Our starting point is not a club in decline, but rather a really vigorous one, but where success has brought its own problems. Key questions around the future of the club have been the need for a secure base, the support and encouragement of coaching and coaches and the personal development of members, as well as  equipment renewal. To help reach consensus on a way forward, the Club undertook a survey of members in November 2014 and held a members day. Subsequently, the committee has produced a development plan which will be circulated at the 2015 AGM. As part of this process, the Club has invested in a new website and membership system and has plans for much more structured coaching and trips in 2015, building on an already full programme. We are also keen to encourage family paddling and to find ways to develop river kayaking and open boating within the Club.

We asked you, what you the members thought as important and now we have produced a short development plan for the Club. It seeks to provide everyone in the Club a route to developing their own paddling, to better support coaches and to address some of the challenges the club faces, such as the club base. The Development Plan was formally adopted by the committee on 18th March 2015. It can be downloaded below.

We are now a big club of just over 240 members. Each year the Introduction to Paddle Sports (Spring) Course is well subscribed. People move through the club: some have established a sister club in Nairn and more recently a Kayak Polo club. The Club was originally a strong river paddling club, but in recent years we’ve seen fewer new river paddlers, although there…
