Equipment Hire 2021

Club equipment is loaned to members for Club Trips and Coaching Sessions. Due to the number of Club events and the challenges of Covid mitigation, Club equipment is only available for Club events during 2021.

Please follow Scottish Government and Club Covid guidance when you hire.

How do I make a booking?

You will be able to book boat hire on WebCollect at the same time as you reserve your paddling place. Payment is made in advance (either through WebCollect or by bank transfer). Unfortunately cash or cheques can no longer be accepted.

Soft kit: Soft kit (cagoules, buoyancy aids and spray decks) are available for use on introductory courses and taster sessions. Thereafter, it is expected members will purchase their own soft kit.  Please ask for advice on what to purchase.  Keep an eye on the Club’s Facebook page for second hand kit. Club soft kit is available in extenuating circumstances for other events.

Collection and Return

The white water kayaks, sea kayaks, open boat/Canadian canoes and stand up paddleboards are currently kept at the Muirtown Basin in Inverness.

Closer to the time of the event you will be advised about collection arrangements, including the name and contact number of the member doing the hire.  Usually the event organiser will arrange for a keyholder to be at the shed at a set time.  If your plans change or you are going to be late, please let the person doing the hire know. They will usually be going on the trip as well so may not be able to wait for latecomers.

Sometimes a Club official may take a trailer of club boats to an event, but generally members are responsible for transporting their own hire boat.  Please ensure you have a suitable means of transporting equipment i.e. a roof rack and tie-down straps unless you have a long vehicle it will go inside; sea kayaks and open boats are to be secured front and rear to vehicle tie down points.

Returning equipment:  Please return equipment in a clean state, rinsed with fresh water to remove salt/water-borne infections. There will be notices in the shed(s) telling you what Covid procedures to follow.

What do you need to check on your equipment? All users are responsible for the basic steps required to keep Club boats and equipment in good working order. When collecting a boat please check the following. If you need help with this please speak to the people helping you collect the kit.

Buoyancy Aids: Is your buoyancy aid a good fit for you?  Is there any obvious damage to the fabric, webbing or buckles?

Spray Decks:  is there any obvious damage to the fabric, elastic or webbing? Please pay particular attention to the release loop.

Paddles: Do you have the correct paddle length, right/left hand,  two matching parts?

Boats: Check there is no obvious damage such as cracks, deep dents or holes.

Sea Kayaks

Toggles:  are the cords at the bow and stern where they enter the toggles and where they pass through the boat intact or are any frayed and worn?

Deck lines: are the deck cords running the length of the boat from cockpit to stern and cockpit to bow intact? Are there worn sections, loose/broken plastic deck fittings that the lines go through.

Shock cord: (the elastic lines running across and along the deck to hold down maps, pumps, split paddles etc). is there any sign of broken, frayed, old/ weak cord?

Hatch Covers: are all the hatch covers fitting properly around their rims? This means they won’t come off or get lost during transport on a car roof or trailer.

Skegs: is the skeg operational? Best to do this before taking a boat away.  None of us want to find a skeg is not working as we round a headland into a beam wind. NB cables are easily bent if skeg buttons are forced when jammed or stiff.  Skeg blades should never be pushed back in by hand as this damages the mechanism. Always use the button to retract the blade. Ask your Trip Leader if you are unsure during a trip.

Foot pegs: are the adjustable foot pegs moving freely as the pegs are adjusted? You’ll need to check their position as your leg length may not be the same as the previous user.

Cockpits: are backrest straps and buckles intact? Are any loose/broken?  Are there any loose items behind the seat or in the cockpit.

White Water Kayaks

Check when you hire the boat that river kayak suits where you are going.  You will see that flat water boats are marked as only to be used in the pool or Muirtown Basin. They are not suitable for rivers.

Airbags: are the airbags fitted and inflated? If they need to be inflated the pump in the soft kit shed is used.  Don’t fully inflate them as they can expand further as the day warms up and the airbag may burst. Please feel free to ask if you are unsure.

Foot pegs:  are the adjustable foot pegs moving freely as the pegs are adjusted?  You’ll need to check their position as your leg length may not be the same as the previous user.

Bungs: are the bung(s) attached and shut?

Cockpits: are backrest straps and buckles intact? Are any loose/broken?  Are there any loose items behind the seat or in the cockpit.

Canoes

Buoyancy: are the buoyancy wedges fitted and properly secured?

Painter: is this attached? Are there any signs of fraying?

Thwarts and Yoke: is anything is loose?

Standup Paddle Boards

Is the fin and paddle leash with the board?

Don’t forget to take a pump with you!

What if equipment gets damaged?  Please return the equipment in the same condition as when you hired it.  We do understand things can break, sometimes there is minor damage from wear and tear.

If your equipment is damaged please report it to the hirer. At the equipment store complete a ‘Damaged Equipment Label’  from the Soft Kit Shed. Tie it to the relevant boat or equipment and email:- This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we can fix it.

Anything smaller than a boat or SUP should be placed in the red trug marked “Needing Attention” in the soft kit shed.
