Coaching & Skills Courses

Inverness Canoe Club offers a variety of courses throughout the year, enabling members to develop their personal skills, as well as embark on the UKCC coaching pathway. For more on how ICC aims to help its members, particularly with regard to leadership and coaching skills, please see here.

A brief summary of upcoming courses is given below. Dates will also be put into the events calendar and will be announced by email.

 

Upcoming courses/training:

Pool sessions continue until 15th March 2019 - just turn up to practice with your peers or, if you want to concentrate on a specific skill, such as rolling, book a block of 5 coached sessions here. 12 adult and 6 child places are available in each block of coached sessions. Outdoor First Aid, 2 Day Course. 16th-17th February 2019 (12 places). *Fully booked, but to add yourself to the waiting list, please see here. If there is sufficient interest, it may be possible to run a second course*

Traditional Canoe Skills. Sundays 20th January, 24 February, 10th and 24th March 2019. 4 informal sessions focussing on rafting, sailing, the use of poles around camp, efficient portaging - and much much more! Intermediate/Advanced WW skills weekend. 16th-17th March 2019. One day will be for intermediates on grade 2/3 and the second day for advanced on 3/4. *Fully Booked. Introduction to Paddlesports Course. Various dates, March-May 2019 (18 places). If you want to give paddlesports a try then this course might be for you. 8 training sessions, 2 in the pool and 6 outside on the Caledonian Canal, are followed by trips on the river and sea in order to put your newly learned skills into practice. The course starts with 2 pool sessions, Friday 22nd and 29th March. *Booking opening shortly*

Courses and training run in 2018:

Outdoor First Aid, 2 Day Course, 6th-7th January 2018 (12 places).

Practical Trip Planning for Sea Kayakers, 4 evening sessions, 26th January-23rd February 2018.

Pool Session: Intro to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding), 9th February and 14th December 2018 (18 adult/16 child places).

Pool sessions, 6th October 2017-9th March 2018. 4 blocks of 4 coached sessions each (12 adult, 8 childrens places in each block).

Introduction to Paddlesports Course. If you want to give paddlesports a try then this course might be for you. 8 training sessions, 2 in the pool and 6 outside on the Caledonian Canal, are followed by trips on the river and sea in order to put your newly learned skills into practice. BCU 2* Skills Course. 6 sessions, including kayaking and canoeing. Tuesday/Thursday evenings, 19th, 24th and 26th April, 1st, 3rd and 10th May 2018, 18:30 - 21:00 at Muirtown Basin, Inverness (6 places). 

BCU 3* Sea Kayak Training. 2 full day sessions and 2 evening sessions. Saturday 16th-Sunday 17th June and Tuesday evenings 19th and 26th June 2018 (6 places). 

Introduction to SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding). By the end of 2 sessions of two hours each day on Saturdays 15th and 22nd September 2018, you should have skills equivalent to BCU 1* level (6 places). 

BCU 3* Sea Kayak Training. 2 full day sessions, Saturday 15th-Sunday 16th September 2018 (6 places). 

BCU 3* Sea Kayak Training. 2 full day sessions, Saturday 22nd-Sunday 23rd September 2018 (6 places). 

RYA Short Range Certificate Course VHF marine radio course. Saturday 22nd September 2018, with a short assessment on Sunday 23rd September 2018 (allowing some overnight revision) at North Kessock Life-Boat station.

WWSR (White Water Safety and Rescue). WWSR training is designed for all paddlers operating in a white water environment, either in a kayak or canoe. ? October 2018 (6 places).

 

Courses run in 2017:

Outdoor First Aid, 2 Day Course, 14th-15th January 2017 (12 places).

Introduction to Paddlesports Course (12 places) and ‘Refresher’ Course (18 places). If you want to give paddlesports a try for the first time or have done some paddling in the past, but would like to refresh your skills, then these courses might be for you. This year we are offering the possibility of a weekend option for the Refresher course (12 places) or weekday evenings for both Introductory (12 places) and Refresher courses (6 places). Various dates, March-May 2017. 

Level 1 Coach Award, 3-4th and 10-11th June 2017, Muirtown Basin, Inverness (6 places). 

Introduction to Paddlesports Course, 26th and 27th August 2017, Muirtown Basin, Inverness (8 places).

Introduction to Paddlesports Course, 26th and 28th June, 3rd and 5th July 2017, Muirtown Basin, Inverness (8 places).

BCU 2* skills course. 6 sessions, including kayaking and canoeing. August-September 2017 (6 places).

VHF Radio Protocols refresher, 20th September 2017, Inverness Aquadome.

N.B. The Scottish Canoe Association Club and Volunteer Weekend at Glenmore Lodge, run each year in April, is also an excellent (low cost) source of training. Please see here for details. The SCA also runs many other subsidised coaching and skills courses.
