Wednesday Evening Sea Paddling

Between May and September, the sea kayakers meet each Wednesday evening - varying the location between Rosemarkie, Avoch, North Kessock and Cromarty. There is always a coached/led group (max 12 people), and a number of non-coached/led paddlers. Places need to be reserved in the coached/led group and bookings will be opened 2 weeks in advance of any given date. Bookings will close on the Sunday night prior to the date of paddling. To book a place and, if necessary, to hire a boat, please see here (you will need to log into WebCollect to see the page).

The details for each meeting place are given below. We aim to be at the meeting place at 6.30pm to be on the water for 7pm - and generally stop for a cup of tea and a snack at some point during the evening, returning around 9pm. Please bring with you appropriate clothing/change of clothes, towel - and your own drinks and snacks.

The coached group will set aside a short period of time each time for practising skills - and the non-coached/led paddlers are encouraged to do the same. A number of evenings will be designated as 'wet sessions', a chance to practice rescues and rolls - as well as make a fool of yourself with balancing games! In September, the evenings are so short that we take light sticks and come back in the dark - often a magical experience as the sun sets over the Moray Firth.

The non-coached/led paddling group need not stay together as one group. There should be some discussion at the start of the evening about what people want to do, where they want to go, and how fast they want to get there. Some folk may want a leisurely paddle whilst others may be looking for an energetic workout. Some may wish to admire the coastal scenery whilst others may wish to play in any tide that may be running. Groups should consist of at least 3 paddlers, who agree to stay together for the evening. It is helpful to have an idea of the level of competence and fitness of the members of the group you are paddling with, and to ensure that you have similar aspirations for the evening before you start off. As a general guide, paddlers will have or be very close to achieving the BCU Sea Kayak Award (formerly 3 star qualification), although there is no requirement to be able to roll. Each paddler should be confident and competent in the conditions they are likely to encounter on any given evening, and have recently (within the last year) practised rescues. It is the responsibility of each individual paddler to have checked the weather forecast and tidal predictions so that they have a realistic expectation of the conditions and how this relates to their paddling abilities. There may or may not be a club coach/leader paddling on any given evening. There is no need to book a place in the non-coached/led paddling group - just turn up. If you wish to hire a boat, but do not require a coached place, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Occasionally, dolphins are encountered when paddling in the Moray Firth - and there are often many dolphin watchers at Chanonry Point: we try not to spoil their enjoyment of the dolphins by avoiding this area when the dolphins are likely to be feeding close inshore. Please note that they are a protected species and there are legal consequences for anyone found to be disturbing them. Your attention is drawn to the club’s Dolphin Code of Conduct.

PLEASE NOTE: It is Club policy that each paddler equips themselves with a set of “tickets” for recording essential paddler information and brings the completed and laminated tickets on each paddling trip. One “ticket” should be handed to the trip leader before launching (to be returned at the end of the trip), one should be carried on the paddler (in your buoyancy aid) and one should be stored in the boat. Blank tickets can be downloaded below - any problems please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Any further information on Wed evening sea paddling, e.g. occasional changes of venue, will be announced via email to the sea kayaking list, so if you want to be kept informed of sea kayaking opportunities within the club please ensure that you have signed up to the sea kayaking list on WebCollect.

Rosemarkie: meet on the grass verge just before the Caravan and Camping Club site (if heading from Rosemarkie out towards Chanonry Point). Please do not park in front of the steps down to the beach, and please be mindful of local residents in respect of getting changed and keeping noise to a minimum. In Rosemarkie, there are public toilets opposite the Plough Inn and near the main car park in Fortrose, opposite the doctor's surgery. These are operated by the local Community Association, to whom the Club makes a donation. There are also toilets at the Leisure Centre in Fortrose.

Avoch: meet at the far (west) end of the village, on Ormonde Terrace. There are public toilets at the harbour.

Cromarty: meet at the start of the links, where the car park and bus stop are. There are toilets near the harbour, by Sutor Creek restaurant and Ecoventures.

North Kessock: meet in the car park by the old ferry pier, opposite the Kessock Hotel. There are public toilets at the Old Ticket Office by the pier.
